Principles of Design

The Elements of Art are planned and organized according to the Principles of Design.

These Principles become rules or laws for the artist as they create. _________________________________________________________________

  • Balance

Feeling of equilibrium among the elements. Sense of being comfortable. It can be symmetrical or asymmetrical.

  • Movement

Arrangements of elements to create a sense of direction. This sense of action usually visual. When real motion exists it is called kinetic.

  • Repetition

Organization achieved by repeating of similar elements of art. It is linked to movement as the viewers eye is carried through the composition. Repetition of elements of art creates to rhythm, just like notes repeating in music create a rhythm.

  • Contrast

Big change in an element of art to create interest. Contrast makes the work interesting without it a design would be monotonous. Examples: Bright color vs. dull color, large shapes vs. small shapes, thick lines vs. thin lines.

  • Emphasis

Focal point or spot of interest within a composition. Dominance or importance given to an area or areas usually caused by contrast.

  • Pattern

Pattern uses the elements in planned or random repetitions. Patterns occur in nature and in art. Pattern increases visual interest by enriching surface appeal.

  • Unity

Visual sense of oneness. Each element of art is arranged to contribute to the composition. Too much variety (opposite) creates chaos however too much order creates boredom.
