New Restaurant In PC

We discovered another new restaurant in Panama City this week.

It's <a href="http://www.redelephantpizza.com/"target=_blank">The Red Elephant Pizza and Grill.

Their address is 2499 Hwy 77 and they are in the shopping center directly across from Target.

We ordered a medium pizza and it was very good, with a light crust that wasn't greasy and fresh toppings. They have a full bar, booth seating and even a game room for the kids.

The decor is very tasteful and modern with really neat and colorful paintings of various animals on the walls. The staff was excellent and friendly too.

Sorry for the quality of my photo, but all I had with me was my cell phone.

Don't Buy A Gateway!

Well, I'm back online after several days of computer trouble, sorry for the dearth of updates.

My 8 month old Gateway computer has given me a few problems since I purchased it, but this last one required adding new components and re-installing Windows Vista and all applications.

Gateway support was unable to solve the problem and wanted me to ship the CPU to their Texas repair facility AT MY OWN COST, even though it was still under warranty! I elected to fix the problem myself, which probably cost me the same as shipping would have, plus I didn't lose my computer for several weeks.

This is my second and last Gateway computer. I've learned to carefully read the warranty when purchasing a new PC. We recently bought a new Dell laptop which came with 3 year in-home service.

Hopefully my experience will save someone aggravation down the road.

For The Artists Out There

The Gulf Jazz Society is sponsoring an art contest for its annual Jazz by the Bay festival in the historic waterfront community of St. Andrews, scheduled this year for October 17th and 18th.

Artists are invited to design and submit an image that can be used as a poster and can be reproduced on T-shirts to be sold at the festival. The image may also be used on note cards.

There will be a first prize of $100 and a second prize of $50. The winning images become the property of Gulf Jazz Society(wwwgulfjazzsociety.com). Other entries may be returned to the artists
prior to the festival.

make adjustments in scale to fit T-shirts or a poster as necessary.

Image edges can be straight, or can fade out, or can be uneven.

Printing (lettering) stating the event, date and sponsors is not necessary

Images can be in any medium

Must be jazz music theme

The winning artist will receive publicity and the opportunity to display
other works at the Jazz by the Bay festival on October 17th & 18th.

The artist will be asked to attend the festival on October 18th to sign posters
and t-shirts.

Entries may be submitted at Bay Art and Frame, <a href="http://maps.google.com/maps?f=l&hl=en&geocode=&q=1109+Beck+Avenue&near=panama+city,+fl&ie=UTF8&z=14&iwloc=A"target="_blank">1109 Beck Avenue, during regular business hours, through July 31st, 2008.

If you haven't been to the library's new location on 11th Street, you should stop by sometime and check it out. There is much more space than the old building had and great lighting. The local history room now has space to properly display the unique historical items they have. There is a used bookstore located inside, plus a snack and coffee area. Now if we can just get them to start stocking music CDs, I'd be ecstatic!

Our new banner artwork was created by local artist Sylvia Van Horn.

During Friday Fest I stopped by Sylvia's new art gallery Artist Within.

It's located in the courtyard across from the Sherman Arcade on Harrison Avenue, upstairs above Gaston's Hideaway and across from En Visions.

Sylvia and her husband John have done a tremendous job renovating and decorating the space. Please stop by and visit them during your next trip downtown.

P.S. If you're an artist, contact Sylvia at (850) 814-5663 about displaying some of your work in her gallery.

Check out some video of the gallery below...

Panama City Dance Club

Grand Square Hall at 11th and Bob Little Road is a favorite spot for dancers!

On Monday nights, swingers take the floor when the Bop and Shag Clubs cool music begins. Its a dance style that brings fond memories of summer nights at the Hang Outon the beach in the 50's 60's and 70's. Call Bruce Fertal at 522-6569 for dance and lesson times.

Tuesday night 7-9 P.M it's PC Country Western Dancers - Two Step and other country rhythms. Instruction and dancing. Call 960-8586 for information

Wednesday night Swinging Squares take over the hall. Three area callers: Jack White, Dave Muller and Bob Poyner alternate nights to call squares. Early Rounds are cued by Sandy Sturgis. Rounds cued in between tips are by Bill Bovard . For program information call Joe and Patricia McLendon : 769-4218.

Thursday night the Dance-A-Rounds gather for an evening of ballroom dancing cued by Bill Bovard and his partner Madelyn Springer. This unique style is perfect for folks who would like to ballroom dance but need some guidance with steps. Popular music is choreographed with named moves so its easy to learn two step, cha-cha, rumba, and swing.

Friday night is Line and Ballroom Dance night. In addition to a night of dancing, Bill and Madelyn offer instruction in all these rhythms. For dance times call 784-7780.

Saturday night the hall is filled with folks who enjoy Ballroom Dancing to a variety of tunes from country to swing. This group is appropriately called the Saturday Night Dance and Social Club because in addition to dancing, they also enjoy socializing for special and not so special occasions.
For information call Dick and Reba Lovejoy: 769-9503 or 763-6018.

Sunday afternoon Sandy Sturgis leads couples through round dance lessons and then cues an afternoon dance. Grand Square Rounds is the name of this group. From two step to tango, youll learn how to have fun and find confidence on the dance floor.
For class times call: 265-9488.

We finally made it into the new Players Club cafe and sports bar that recently opened on 23rd Street in Panama City. Sorry for the quality of the photos, I didn't have my camera and had to use my cellphone.

We sat at the bar and chatted with Mike (the owner) who was extremely nice. He boasted that their hot wings were the best in town, so we ordered a batch and he wasn't lying! They were excellent!

It's great to have a high quality sports bar like this in town. Plenty of room, lots of pool tables, dart boards and seating. Check out their menu below. They also have live music, trivia games, karaoke and other fun stuff during the week.

Dancing Anyone?

I just received information from a local Panama City Dance Club about what they have going on and it's quite a bit!

Until I get a page put together for them with more information, please read below to learn more.

For class times call: 265-9466.

Joy Boots Project

This is something I hope every accomplished or aspiring artist will get involved with. I didn't know Marisa, but after reading Tony Simmons' beautifully heartfelt tribute, I feel her loss. The information below is from Tony's News Herald blog and the Facebook page created for the project

Marisa Joy Williams brought sunshine to a lot of lives in her 18 short years. She often did so while sporting a pair of hand-painted rainboots.

Now some friends want to extend that light to others through a charity art project in her name: Project Joy Boots.

This is from the Facebook group description written by Katie Vickmark: The world cant miss out on the generosity, creativity, and heart that Marisa possessed, so Jazma and I came up with this idea, and for anybody who wants to participate, tell us!"

We thought that if her friends and family could decorate pairs of puddle stompers (aka rainboots), and we had an art show with them as the subject, then auction them off, all the money ( at Ms. Donnas suggestion) could go to a scholarship for theater students, or we could make a donation to the humane society."

This is still in the planning stage, but if we work hard enough we could have the show around her birthday.

Marisas birthday is Aug. 17. That gives everyone a few months to get their act together, to contact the group, to have painting parties like the one at the Simmons compound last Sunday, and to arrange a show and auction site. (A current idea floating around was to have a gallery entrance fee of animal food for the shelter, then donate the funds raised by the auction to the college.)"

The Facebook group has received notes from as far away as Pensacola, St. Louis and Orlando from folks who pledge to contribute boots. they would love to hear from any artists (amateur or professional) who would like to participate, or galleries that could contribute space for a show and auction for a good cause."

Here is a link to the Project Joy Boots Facebook Page
